Classes

Woodworking: Make Your Own Picture Frame (Adults and Youth 15+ with a Registered Adult)

Get introduced to the basics of woodworking as it pertains to picture framing. You'll learn woodworking techniques like measuring and calculating dimensions, cutting and joining molding, reinforcing a miter joint with splines, and basic woodshop safety. We'll also cover the framing process including matting art or floating with spacers, putting together the frame, and installing hardware for hanging. Plan to leave the class with your own 16" x 20" frame with art inside ready for hanging.

Special Notes

  • Students should plan to bring a sketchbook or notebook and writing utensil to class. Students can also bring one flat work of art that is 16" x 20" or smaller to be framed if you have one. This weekend intensive is a condensed version of the multi-week class and some aspects of the project will be pre-cut and pre-wood-finished due to the shorter class.
If under 18, student must be accompanied by a registered adult. Classes are confirmed one week prior to the start date. In order to help us confirm classes, please register as early as possible. On-site courses do not come with studio access outside of class time. Paid open studio access is available through our Studio Access Program. Please visit visarts.org for more information.
