About the Instructor
Evie Metz
Evie Metz is an award-winning independent filmmaker, animation director, photographer, and multimedia artist whose work explores the profound cycles of life and the intrinsic values of human existence.
Her passion for teaching manifests in encouraging people to be their authentic selves while discovering their creative vision. By providing confidence with tools, techniques, and skills for professional execution, she seeks to cultivate a supportive community that begins in the classroom and continues on afterward.
Through an interdisciplinary creative practice, she delves into the archetypal essence of being, creating immersive narratives that investigate themes of fantasy, otherness, and the natural world. Inspired by mythology and folklore, Metz’s storytelling balances humor and playfulness to thoughtfully reflect the existential and mythical dimensions of human life.
Evie is as 24-25 Artist-in-Residence at the Visual Arts Center. In 2024 the James River Film Society awarded her animation Judy's Garden with first prize for best film in their curated showcase. This short film was also included in the 2024-2025 Virginia Museum of Contemporary Art Biennial.
Her films have shown nationally and internationally at various venues including the Virginia Museum of Fine Art, Vancouver International Film Festival, Chicago International Film Festival, and Glasgow Short Film Festival. Her work is featured in online publications, such as in NJStage, RVA Mag, NoBudge, and Girls in Film. Recent solo and group exhibitions include the Andrews Gallery in Williamsburg, VA, Rhizome in Washington DC and Nitehawk Cinema in NYC. Her films and sculptures were also selected as a 2023 Trawick Prize Finalist and received the Young Artist Award.
