Introduction to Hand Building + Surface Design Techniques

Learn basic hand building techniques such as coil, slab, slumping, pinching. Play with new ideas for using underglazes and image transfer methods. Each class will include a demonstration but students are encouraged to explore their own ideas!

Special Notes

  • All materials and equipment provided. Instructor will provide overview of techniques and ideas for inspiration each class but students are also encouraged to pursue their own ideas for projects.

    Please bring a towel and a set of basic clay tools if you have them.
    You will receive 25 pounds of clay; additional clay is available for purchase. 

    On-site courses do not come with studio access outside of class time. Paid open studio access is available through our Studio Access Program. Please visit visarts.org for more information.

    Classes are confirmed one week prior to the start date. In order to help us confirm classes, please register as early as possible.
About the Instructor

Merenda Cecelia

Merenda Cecelia lives in Richmond, Va. She is an artist and state certified art educator with extensive experience in mosaic work including several large installations. She has taught for 12 years in a variety of settings including public and private schools, the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, and The Visual Arts Center since graduating with a BFA in Art Education from Virginia Commonwealth University. She also works at the VMFA planning large community events, and when she is not doing that you can find her in the yoga studio or playing in creeks with her son.
