Contemporary Quilts Exhibition Opens Friday, Dec. 1 in VisArts’ True F. Luck Gallery

An exhibition of work by 13 selected American artists titled “The Embedded Message: Quilting in Contemporary Art,” opens at the Visual Arts Center of Richmond on Friday, December 1.

A 5:30 p.m. curator talk will be followed by a public reception from 6 to 8 p.m. This exhibition explores how a current generation of contemporary artists are employing quilt traditions and techniques to make social, political and personal commentary.

These textile-based sculptures presented on the wall and floor exemplify the ways in which 13 selected American artists mine the historic meaning, techniques and processes of traditional quilt making. In so doing, the pieces collectively uphold the legacy of quilt making, typically used for commemoration of social events, history, community and lineage, as a relevant, conceptual and strategic art form for the cultural expressions of today.

The exhibition runs through February 11, 2018 in VisArts’ True F. Luck Gallery. The gallery is open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. and on weekends from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
