Life Portraits in Graphite
Learn how to accurately draw portraits from life. Students will learn basic drawing skills with graphite pencils, including contour line, hatching, and blocking method, as well as facial proportion measuring and structure study of human faces from life drawing practice.
Special Notes
- For privacy and professional reasons, using cell phones will be strictly prohibited during class time. This class will be drawing from life models. Life session drawing could be a physically demanding art practice, although there will be breaks in between, students who wish to enroll need to make sure their physical/ health condition would allow them to participate. Recommended for students with prior figure drawing experiences.
On-site courses do not come with studio access outside of class time. Paid open studio access is available through our Studio Access Program. Please visit visarts.org for more information.
This instructor speaks Mandarin Chinese, but the class is held in English.
Classes are confirmed one week prior to the start date. In order to help us confirm classes, please register as early as possible.

About the Instructor
Dalton Zheng
Dalton Zheng is a Chinese ink painter based in Richmond, VA, who concentrates on figurative art. As an artist who was born and raised in China, Dalton’s works are heavily influenced by his cultural background and contemporary life.
Dalton is currently an instructor in the Department of Communication Arts at Virginia Commonwealth University. Dalton received Visual Arts Fellowship from Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, and his paintings were featured in many exhibitions.
