Metal and Jewelry:

Basic Bead Weaving

Beginner/Intermediate

Learn various methods of off-loom bead weaving using seed beads and delicas for both flat and 3-dimensional works. These can become the foundation methods to use for simple jewelry on up to your own bead sculptures. You will learn the basics- flat peyote, tubular peyote, single-needle right-angle weave - along with different forms of basic embellishments to highlight your work. Class meets at the artist’s Richmond studio. Materials fee of $60 is due to instructor the first night of class. This fee covers tools and some materials.

Bead-a-Bead Workshop

Beginner/Intermediate

This class instructs you how to use the peyote stitch around any sort of aperture (sphere, square, etc.), and to embellish your bead-a-bead. Check out Ingrid’s web site www.ingridbernhardt.com to see some examples. $15 materials fee due at the beginning of class. Limit 8 students. This class is taught at the artist’s Richmond studio.

Cabochon Brooch

All Levels

You will provide your favorite cabochon (domed stone with one flat side-no hole), and we’ll provide the rest to attach your stone onto Ultrasuede with clasp. Then the fun begins as we sew peyote stitch or netting to surround your cabochon. Add spikes, seed beads and accent beads that will result in your fabulous brooch. $15 materials fee due at the beginning of class. Limit 8 students. This class is taught at the artist’s Richmond studio.

Fringe Bead Bracelet Workshop

All Levels

Make a funky bracelet with large seed beads that are sewn onto a cable base with silver-plated magnetic clasp closure. You may not finish the bracelet in one day, but you will be well on your way to completing it. Check out Ingrid’s web site www.ingridbernhardt.com. $20 materials fee due at the beginning of class. Introduction to Metal Jewelry

All Levels

This class covers the basics of metal jewelry. Students learn raising, sinking, forging, stretching, fabricating metal, stone setting and a variety of other techniques. In addition, students use tools such as files, hammers and patinas to help create their own unique look. Students will need to purchase their own materials and some tools. Open to all levels of experience. This class can be repeated to advance your jewelry making skills.

Metal Casting for Jewelry

All Levels

This course covers the fundamentals of metal casting using the lost-wax technique. Working from their own designs, students will use wax to create jewelry models to cast in metal. The course includes the following techniques, model preparation, investing, burning out, and the actual casting process. Tuition includes some materials; the purchase of additional metal is be required. Course may be repeated.

Metal Jewelry I

All Levels

In learning to forge their own metal jewelry, students solder metal to metal using an acetylene torch, study the characteristics of various metals, and explore metal decorating techniques, from surface texturing to coloring. In addition the course covers acid etching, riveting, and basic stone setting. Includes most materials and some tools. Course may be repeated.

Metal Jewelry II

Intermediate/Advanced

This class is intended for students who have already taken two or more metal jewelry classes. In this course, you will work on independent projects with supervision and guidance from the instructor. Development and/or expansion of individual design work will be emphasized. Various metalworking techniques will be demonstrated, as required. Students will need to purchase their own materials and some tools.

Ndebele Rope-Beadwork Workshop

All Levels

Learn to make a supple rope of seed beads in this South African technique of off-loom bead weaving. You will learn to embellish your work by adding different sizes and types of beads and adding decorative twists. You can complete a bracelet in class, or be on your way to finishing a necklace or lariat. If you are a beginner, you will also learn some basic jewelry-making skills. $25 materials fee is payable to the instructor at the beginning of class.

Precious Metal Clay Workshop

Beginner

Turn clay into precious metal? Must be magic! No, it’s Precious Metal Clay (PMC). The clay is molded into a desired form, dried and kiln-fired, fusing the metal particles into .999 pure silver. After the finishing process, the result is a durable, wearable work of art! We will focus on making beads or small, formed objects using PMC+. Hollow or solid, we will explore a range of decorating and finishing techniques. A supply list will be mailed. A lab fee of $20 is due to instructor on the first night. Tools and PMC will need to be purchased prior to class (estimated cost is $50 – 75).
