VACR‘s Young Artist Society in early 2008 completed a beautiful community mural project, enriching the Virginia Home’s second-floor resident hall. The Virginia Home is a nonprofit facility providing nursing, therapeutic and residential care to adult Virginians with irreversible physical disabilities. Twenty-six students from Richmond and surrounding county high schools contributed their time, commitment and talent in the creation of the mural over the course of four Saturday workshops.

On February 21 the Virginia Home hosted an opening reception to commemorate the mural’s installation. Phyllis Galanti, President of the Virginia Home Board of Trustees, exclaimed how they were “blown away by the scope of the project upon installation!”
Many residents commented on the beauty of the colors and recognized the Richmond imagery of the Carillon, the James River, and Downtown. One of the residents said that since her room was right next-door, she was going to refer to the space as her art gallery.
Galanti added, “It is no exaggeration to state that the caring support of friends like the VACR is the reason the Virginia Home is able to provide a lifelong happy home for our residents.” Thanks to all who supported YAS in this excellent opportunity to serve our community.
This project was made possible through the Artist Teaching Residency for Youth funded by Target.
