Returning for its second year, we have a new and exciting line-up of Art & Coffee programs. Join us on second and fourth Tuesdays at 9:30-10-:30 AM for an energizing hour learning something new about art. There’s coffee provided by neighboring Rostov’s Coffee and some sort of fresh-baked treat, too.

January 12 – The Curatorial Process
Learn about what happens after you submit your work to a gallery. Maggie Smith, Curatorial Administrator at Quirk, will explain their submission and adjudication process. Quirk has three distinct galleries, each with a different feel. Join Maggie as she discusses the types of questions they consider when they are selecting work for their exhibitions. January 26 – Narrative Jewelry
The “Wearable Art” movement increased awareness of texture and imbued surfaces with meaning. Texture makes you want to just pick up a piece of art. Artist and jeweler, Lynalise Woodlief will introduce surface texturing on metal, using letter stamps, enamel, and patina techniques.  Watch as layer upon layer of rich and colorful textures start to take on shape and meaning. Bring your ideas, experiences and stories and share in the creation of this narrative piece of jewelry.intuitiveline

February 9 – Amie Oliver – The Intuitive Line Workshop
Amie will demonstrate new ways to think about drawing and mark-making during this one hour workshop. She will explore gesture, observation, texture, and contour using unique combinations of tools and techniques. Amie Oliver earned her MFA from Bowling Green (Ohio) State University. She is a professional artist and teacher.

February 23 – Robin Kranitzky and Kim Overstreet
Gallery talk and book signing for Symbiotic Realms – Robin Kranitzky and Kim Overstreet Selected Works 1985-2008, a 150 page, beautiful, full color catalogue featuring the narrative jewelry of Kranitzky & Overstreet, published by the Helsinki Design Museum, to accompany their 2008 exhibition.Cat Salt & Pepper Shaker

March 9 – Aijung Kim – Gel Transfer Demonstration
Learn a fun way of layering images called gel transfer. Using gel medium and photocopies of images, artist Aijung Kim will demonstrate how to embed the images in transparent gel “skins” and explore ways of using them in painting and collage. This method is versatile and the gel tranfers can be applied to paper, canvas, wood panels, glass, and even fabric.

March 23 – Shelley Jones – Wire Crochet with Glass Beads
Learn to crochet with wire and glass beads! You will learn to crochet wire, using a simple chain stitch. Beginners will also pick up some basic jewelry techniques.march23

April 13 – Bird Cox – Memoirs in Brief Workshop
Writer Bird Cox will discuss the process of transferring memory to poetic format. Relevant authors such as Neruda, Gluck, Williams and others will be explored. Participants will generate a collection of moments or images from their lives with which to create a series of short lyric poems.

April 27 – Barbara Atkinson – Working in Glass

Learn the process of creating a custom piece in glass- from design and fabrication to final installation with instructor Barbara Atkinson (Partner, Atkinson-Betts Stained Glass). Working with lead and copper foil methods in the studio, she will demonstrate glass embellishment techniques such as double-glazing, engraving, and sandblasting.

May 11 – Steve Prince – Second Line: New Creations
A hands-on workshop led by printmaker Steve Prince. Participants will delve into the limitless process of creating multi-colored mono-prints in the spirit of New Orleans Jazz traditions. Working with various found objects considered to be dead or discarded, we will imbue them with life through the creative process to make a New Creation.

May 25 – Susan Iverson – Tapestry and Jacquard – the Hand and the Machine
Explore the two extremes of technology and weaving. Tapestry is the most basic weave structure and therefore the most versatile. Using an industrial loom, the formation of images through complex patterns can be achieved. Iverson is a professor in the Craft/Material Studies Department at VCU School of the Arts.

June 8 – Ingrid Bernhardt – Beaded Medallion Workshop
Hand Loom a Square Medallion with a mix of glass beads. Workshop is designed to be an appetizer to Bernhardt’s 6 week evening class at the Visual Arts Center (June 8- July 13) that explores single-needle right-angle weaving to make a three dimensional beaded box.
